On Jan. 29, 2015, Anthem, Inc., a multistate Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, discovered a significant data breach, potentially affecting as many as 80 million individuals. Both current and former Highmark members who received medical services at some time in the last ten years in an Anthem service area (14 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin) may have been affected.
While Highmark is not directly affiliated with Anthem, it has been determined that some of our member information was compromised in the breach because of BlueCard information in the Anthem data warehouse that was targeted. BlueCard is a national program that enables members of one Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan to obtain health care services while traveling or living in another Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan's service area.
Because of this privacy breach, three communications are planned for these audiences:
- Letter from Highmark to self-funded and cost-plus groups
- Letter from Highmark to affected members
- Letter from Anthem to affected members
